"Save a Paw- - Don't Declaw"
Proposition: "To convince the audience that they should not declaw cats"
Introduction:
I got the call last Monday, my cat Joseph was gone. It was not a big surprise, he had been sick for three months, he was 16, which is old for a cat. I was glad that I had spent that morning carrying and holding him; feeling his purring vibrate his whole body. He was my cat, I was his person he had been with me since he was a little kitten. slide 1
*
Pets like Joey are part of our families, we receive love and affection from them. The responsibility for their care and protection falls to us. Which is why I urge you to never declaw your cat.
*
Body:
I will first talk about the declawing issue by explaining the procedure. Secondly I will tell you about the places where declawing is actually illegal. Finally I will tell you about the many alternatives that are available.
I. First why do people declaw and what is meant by this?
A. The reasons often given for declawing include prevention of damage to furniture, and protect small children.
B. What is declawing? According to the Pawprints and Purrs Inc. article "Clawed for Life....", at sniksnak.com, last visited March 10, 2008: "Declawing is the removal of bones, tendons, ligaments, claws and the first knuckle of each toe." slide 2
C. As you can imagine if your fingers were amputated to the first knuckle there would be some side effects. In The New Natural Cat, copyright: 1990; by Anitra Frazer; a nationally known feline nutritionist; the complications are described. They can be crippling. They include "gradual weakening of the muscles in legs, shoulders and impaired balance. A declawed cat is essentially clubfooted, his balance is irrevocably shifted back to the rear of his pads." slide 3
1. By taking his claws a cat is left with one main way to tell you something is wrong. Biting. Biting won't damage the furniture but a cat can still bite a small child. Which can cause more damage then a small scratch to let the child know that his actions are unwelcome.
2. Other complications are mentioned on the website: LittleBigCat; littlebigcat.com; last updated March 09, 2008; And can include Abscesses and claw regrowth. Joint stiffness; the tendons can become "frozen" with the toes remaining fully contracted for the rest of the cats life. Arthritis can occur as a consequence of the altered gait caused by declawing.
*
II. Secondly many countries have already outlawed the practice, citing it as animal cruelty. And there are a few cities in our own country which are following suit.
A. Most European countries have outlawed declawing. This includes the United Kingdom.
1. According to the Swiss Animal Protection Act of 1978; text obtained from Michigan State University College of Law website: animallaw.info: Last Updated March 5, 2008. Section 8: Prohibited Practices Article 22. 1 Animals may not be maltreated, seriously neglected or needlessly overworked. 2. It is also forbidden:... g. to cut off the claws of cats and other felines,….
B. West Hollywood California banned the practice in 2004. In an article by Bob Egelko of the San Francisco Chronicle; June 23, 2007; Bob wrote that: The state appeals court had reinstated the West Hollywood ban.
1. The West Hollywood Ordinance declares that the "mere convenience (of declawing) to the pet's guardian does not justify the unnecessary pain, anguish and permanent disability caused (to) the animal."
*
III. Finally what can be done? There are many alternatives to declawing.
A. Training; is one it's not that hard, in Whole Health For Happy Cats, by Sandy Arora, copyright 2006; it is suggested that you keep a spray bottle with water handy to squirt the cat if he claws something he's not supposed to. Also placing a scratching post next to an area that he likes to claw can be more attractive than the furniture. Slide 6
1. There are many products available now that discourage cats from clawing: Feliway is a liquid pheromone that can be sprayed on furniture to calm and deter cats marking tendencies. It can be found at most pet stores and at feliway.uk.com, site last updated March 10, 2008.
2. Sticky Paws is a double sided tape that can be safely put on furniture and walls, cats don't like the sticky texture and they leave it alone. Available at stickypaws.com, last updated March 10, 2008.
B. If these solutions don't work for you then, trimming the claws is another way to go, it only has to be done every two weeks or so and makes a blunt end. You must be careful to cut off only the sharp tip and use guillotine style cutters. slide 7
C. There is also a wonderful product called Soft Claws, available at softclaws.com, last updated March 8, 2008. With Soft Claws you clip the claws and glue on a vinyl nail cap. The cat can still retract his claws, walk normally but not cause any damage. They even come in a variety of colors. So you can give your cat a blue or pink or purple manicure. slide 8

In conclusion I have spoken about declawing by explaining the realities of the procedure and the possible complications; many countries have outlawed this procedure already. I have given several alternatives which I can tell you from personal experience work very well.

Declawing, by Suzanne Weaver A cat who had a manicure, That is, his claws removed, Was brooding on the the state of things, With hopes they would improve. No longer could he scratch the couch, The rug remained intact, The furniture looked good for once, The glasses all stayed stacked. Each day dragged by, the cat was bored, To motivate got tough. "Without my nails I'm half a cat, I might as well be stuffed." A thought came to him with the dawn, While he was still in bed; "A claw is fine but what the hell, I'll use my teeth instead."

Please consider carefully, weigh your conscience and become an advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. "Save a paw - Don't declaw". Slide 9
